Wooden, carved stool. Fine, light wood, smoothly finished. Thin, curved seat, four small triangles incised on top. Middle section, diamond shaped, with four triangular supports. Flat, tiered base. Written on base.: "SERBE STOOL, Ashanti", perhaps referring to title or style of stool. General appearance is of a nicely carved model, little handled, and in good condition.

Model of traditional Ashanti stool. Stools of this general style were (and to some extent still are) symbols of authority, symbol of one's standing within the culture. The specific design of each stool has specific meaning - tells a story, reflects a myth.
