About the jewelled gecko – moko kākāriki

A jewelled gecko – moko kākāriki returned to Otago after being smuggled from its Otago Peninsula home into Germany three years ago and was officially welcomed to its new home at the Otago Museum in December 2016. Jewelled geckos are culturally significant for the tāngata whenua of Otago because they are considered a taoka (treasure).

The public can view the gecko in his new purpose-built terrarium on the Museum’s Atrium Level 1. Museum visitors can also learn about its lifestyle and cultural significance to local iwi in a gallery talk, daily on weekends and holidays.

Competition closes 5pm, Friday 19 May 2017

A panel will select 3 entries which will go to a public vote commencing 9am Monday 29 May until 12 noon Friday 23 June. Voting will be available online at or at the Otago Museum. The winner will be announced on Wednesday 28 June and will be notified by email.
