Kia Rapua – Science Playground

Young learners are constantly wondering and discovering. Kia Rapua – Science Playground aims to create a playful environment that will foster scientific thinking by giving young children the time, space, and materials to exercise their curiosity. Kia Rapua – Science Playground will engage young children in hands-on explorations, experimentations, and explanations through creating positive experiences for children, and breaking barriers that portray science as something out of our reach and accessible only to a few. It is aimed at young children between three and seven years old, and investigates the concepts of sound, colour, textures, ramps and building.

The project is working with four preschool partners around Dunedin – Little Citizens, Green Street Early Learning Centre, and the Roslyn Maori Hill and Wakari Kindergartens. After a public launch the playground will travel to each of these preschool centres for a month at a time so that the educators there can use the playground to do fun science activities with the children in their care. Working with these partners, the Museum has also developed a set of do-it-yourself at home science activities for families.

This project is funded by a grant from Unlocking Curious Minds.
