Atrium Stairwell

On 29 May 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.

They were the first recorded climbers to ever reach the 8,848m summit.

Experience the exhilarating story of Hillary and Norgay’s expedition as you climb our Atrium stairs, and see Hillary’s passport, camera, mug and other personal items that went with them.

The Hillary Collection was gifted to us by June, Lady Hillary, and Hillary’s children Peter and Sarah Hillary.

Please note that parts of this display are not accessible via wheelchair as they are on the stairwell. We apologise for the inconvenience.
