CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

These conditions of entry apply to all submissions to the Science Show Offs Competition 2019.

Competition details

1. The competition opens at 9am on Friday, 6 September 2019 and closes at 12pm on Sunday, 6 October 2019. No entries will be accepted outside of these dates.

2. All entries must be submitted online, via the form on this website. If you have no internet access but would still like to enter, please contact the Science Show Offs team at Amadeo.EnriquezBallestero@otagomuseum.nz, or 03 474 7474.

3. All entries will be publicly available on the Otago Museum (the organiser’s) website, which will include an online voting portal for the People’s Choice Award.

4. Each person can submit three entries to the competition. If more than three video entries are submitted, only the first three entries sent will be counted.

5. Winning and highly commended videos will be announced at the Vogel Street Party on Saturday, 12 October 2019. Winning and highly commended entrants will also be contacted by email and/or phone.

6. The organisers reserve the right to disqualify entries that are deemed inappropriate for, or offensive to, the Museum audience, at its sole discretion.

7. Staff and families of the competition organisers are not eligible to enter the competition.

8. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Technical information

9. Video entries must adhere to the following specifications: maximum 180 seconds long; maximum file size 500MB; video format H264 codec (.mov or .mp4); resolution 720p or 1080p; aspect ratio 16:9; bitrate: 20mbps max.

10. Submitted video entries that fail to meet the specified format will not be considered and will be disqualified from entry with no correspondence entered into.

11. If the organisers are unable to open or upload the entries submitted because of technical errors caused by file quality or if the file is damaged, the organiser reserves the right not to include the entries in the competition. No correspondence will be entered into with the entrant.

Prize categories

12. Entry is open to all school aged students in years 5–13 who reside in the Otago region. There are two age groups: Years 5-8 and Years 9-13.

13. Prize categories are (in each age group): Science Communication, Most Entertaining, Grand Regional Entry, and People’s Choice.

14. Booking for the Science Show party prize to be mutually agreed based on Otago Museum availability. Restricted to a location within the Otago region.

15. Prizes are non-transferable and are not redeemable for cash.

Copyright, Intellectual Property, and Privacy

16. The entrant must be the original creator of the video entered as described in the Copyright Act 1994. Any attempt at plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.

17. Entrants agree to grant Otago Museum a perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use submitted videos for marketing, commercial and editorial use. Entrants will be credited in all possible circumstances.

18. The organisers acknowledge the moral rights provisions of the Copyright Act 1994, including the right to be identified as the author of the work and the right to object to derogatory treatment of the work. To preserve the artistic integrity of the entry, no work will be intentionally edited, altered, demeaned, or misrepresented in any way.

19. It is the entrant’s responsibility to obtain appropriate written permission from people who are identifiable in their video, including informing them that the videos will be made public on the Otago Museum website and social media. The entrant must produce evidence of that consent to the organisers if requested.

20. The entrant fully indemnifies the organisers against any claims arising from the display or use of unaltered work as described herein, and from the infringement of intellectual property rights of any third party.

Consent

21. Entrants agree to be contacted by the organisers regarding this competition as well as future Science Show Offs Competitions.

22. The entrant’s acknowledgement of, and consent to, these Conditions of Entry is granted through submission of their entry or entries to the competition.

 

JUDGING CRITERIA

Presentation (40pts)

Did the presenter follow a clear sequence, and convey enthusiasm about their Show Off/demonstration?

Science content (30 pts)

Did the presenter clearly explain the science of the Show Off/ demonstration?

X factor (20 pts)

Does the video have the X factor? Does it grab attention in an engaging way?

Technical Organisation (10 pts)

Video production quality – including but not limited to continuity, timing, camera operation, sound quality, editing, and adherence to the time limit (maximum 180 seconds).
