419 Great King Street Dunedin, New Zealand

River kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, AV11506

Physical Description

Wood-backed glass box containing a basic diorama of a woodpecker and a kingfisher perching on branches.
This specimen is the woodpecker, which is on the lower PR side and is perching and leaning forward with its beak facing forward, its tail up and its wings folded back against its body.

Provenance

The item was gifted to Mary Duffy in 1973 by Mrs Cuthbertson, who is thought to have brought the item with her when she emigrated from England to New Zealand. Mrs Cuthbertson owned a grocery store in St Kilda, and her daughter was Doris Miller, former Mayor of Tawa. It was through Doris that Mary met Mrs Cuthbertson.

Field Collection

Place of collection unknown. Donor Mary Duffy assumes it was brought over from England by its original owner, Mrs Cuthbertson. The birds are Northern Hemisphere species, which supports this assumption. (taken from ACQ130018)
