Figure, Burner, Incense, D37.489

Physical Description

Gilded bronze figure of a male seated on a lotus seat in the lotus position with right hand raised with the other in lap. Palm of left hand has hole in - possibly for incense sticks. Figure is elaborately clothed and jewelled with a headdress bearing images of five past buddhas (?). Figure has also been painted with paint still adhering to the hair, headdress and "jewels". A brass base plate has been fitted and has a yin and yang symbol surrounded by stylised flames or flowers engraved on it. This is probably a Bodhisattva (a Buddha to come) because of the rich costuming. Almost certainly the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara
